Unknown Strangers
Every day, you walk around at school, anywhere in public. When you see someone that looks the slightest bit different, you focus on them. As soon as you see them, you already have an idea of how they act and what they do. For example, when I was walking down the hallway last week, I noticed a kid with a mohawk. As I thought about this kid, I figured he must listen to punk music, probably raised by bad parents, and eager to express themselves with their style. But after really listening to the kid who I realized was in one of my classes later on in the day, I noticed that I had him all wrong. No matter where we go, no matter what we do when you see someone you judge them. What makes you different from the others is whether or not you still give those people a chance. Ignore whatever preconceived notions you have about a person, and talk to them, get to know them. You may be really surprised about who they are despite how they dress. Alot of people act tough or guarded when walking alone, but when you really talk to them, you will be surprised at what you find. That's all for this week....

I agree with you 100% kyle. For some odd reason it's in our DNA to automatically make assumptions. Although this is unfriendly, sometimes it helps. For example, your walking in a large city in the middle of the night passed a dark alley. If everyone in the world had perfect character, one wouldn't thing twice about using the alley as a shortcut. But as you know the world isn't all that great so being the intelligent species we are, most would take the long way, maybe even run. I'm not saying that prejudice is good, but sometimes it's in our own well-being that we make and use these assumptions.
ReplyDeleteWhy might it be in our DNA to distrust "strangers"? What advantage might that serve us beyond safety?
ReplyDeleteKyle you are so right. I believe that the disapointing part about judging someone is not to give them a chance. Sometimes you not only judge people by how they look but also by what other say, which is disapointing as well.
ReplyDeleteThis seems to be very true Kyle. I tend to judge people all the time because of the way they look and even the way they talk. Some people can't really help what they look like or how they act. It is wrong to judge other people because everyone should be treated the same it shouldn't matter the gender or race they are, but i like the way you think.
